Week 9 Recap - Apr 10, 2024

Well hello all you party people in the house! This is Billy Concarney and I’m going to fudge my way through what happened this past Monday.

Fire vs Sabres

This game saw the undermanned Fire facing the Sabres. Fire were missing star goalie Jason Boudreau who is facing uncertainty for the remainder of the season as he suffered an injury in another league. Thanks to Keven Kennedy for jumping in.
The Sabres scored first but that was quickly followed by a goal from the Fire. Then Brett Dempsey grabbed two goals to record his natural hat trick then Aiden Walsh tallied as well and the Sabres had a 4-1 lead. The Fire kept coming and Geoff Briggs scored followed by Mike Giles and they were within one. 4-3 after the first
The second saw the Fire D men sniping the first two goals of the period, one from Dan Carver and another one by Mike Giles. But journeyman Gord Fitzpatrick grabbed a goal followed by Aiden Walsh with his second to keep the Sabres up by one. 6-5 after the second.
The third started with Geoff Briggs ripping his second of the game but Matt Strum kept pace and followed with his first of the night. Dan Carver and Mike Giles both added their names to the game sheet again, Mike scoring his third of the night. Nice Hatty Mike! They held their first lead of the night, but it was short lived as Matt Strum pulled through in the dying minutes on a feed from Eddie Briggs. This one ended in a hard fought tie. 8-8

Slayers vs Hackers

Hackers came out firing on all cylinders and were rewarded with the first three goals of the game. Spencer Foulkes, Shannon Thoms and Stu Whidden taking the honours. 3 zip after the first for the Hackers.
But the Slayers stormed back with 5 unanswered goals to start the second, from…well..some guys on their team. Check the score sheet haha. Ok, ok, Rylan Smith, two from Mark Slaunwhite and two from Sam Whidden and these guys had the lead. But the Hacks came back with two more one from Marty Monk and Spencer’s second of the game and she was all tied after two.
The third saw Spencer Foulkes cap off the Hat Trick scoring first, but Mark Slaunwhite grabbed his third for a Hatty. The Hackers jumped into a lead with the next two from Steve Combdon and Myles Raymond. But the lead did not last long as Rylan Smith scored on a pass from Myles Raymond to even it up. 7-7 tie. Ok, so I don’t know who passed the ball to Rylan for this one, but the score sheet says Myles…so that’s what I saying. Ei!

Lynx vs Chill

Well, I got two words Dylan Warren! This cat stood tall. Not by the shot count, but by the quality of saves he made. Heck at one point people thought Marty Kane was back in nets! The reach around glove save was unbelievable…just like the comment about Marty Kane.
Ok, enough of that. This was playoff calibre hockey. The like of which I cannot really put into words, so please check the score sheet and just close your eyes and make up the play in your head. It’s much more exciting than reading my made up stories because I wasn’t there. I think I might be getting fired now…
I do know this, Dylan Warren’s performance has landed him a new contract for next season here at the HFHL as well as getting named as this weeks HFHL Player of the Week. Great job bud.

So one more week, then the real season starts. A bit of a jam at the top with the Chill and sabres tied for first. But lots can be decided next week.
Look forward to seeing where things end up.
Thank you also to those who have reached out regarding my surgery. Appreciate the concerns.
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and have a great rest of the week peeps!
